When to Engage a DFIR Firm
Most organizations call a DFIR firm at one of five moments: a ransom note appears; monitoring flags activity nobody can explain; an employee leaves and data leaves with them; a cyber insurance carrier or breach counsel requires an independent investigation; or an internal IT team, or an MSP, reaches the edge of what it can investigate safely.
The common thread is not severity. It is that someone needs to know what happened, prove it, and stop it from continuing, and needs that answer to hold up in front of a carrier, a regulator, or a board.
If an attack is in progress right now, call the emergency line. This page is for scoping an engagement or putting coverage in place before you need it.
What we do and don't do
Proven Data performs incident driven digital forensics: investigating, containing, and recovering from active and recent security incidents. We do not provide litigation support, expert witness testimony, eDiscovery, consumer or personal device examinations, or traditional data recovery for failed or damaged hardware.
Every Incident Type. One DFIR Team.
Different incidents fail in different ways. Here is what each one looks like from the inside, and what our response actually does.
Ransomware & Cyber Extortion
What it looks like: Files renamed with an unfamiliar extension, a ransom note on multiple machines, backup jobs failing, or your organization named on a leak site before you have told anyone.
What we do: Isolate at the network layer, protect Active Directory and backup infrastructure first, establish whether exfiltration occurred, and scope the intrusion before anything is rebuilt. Encryption events and extortion only incidents both start here.
Business Email Compromise & Account Takeover
What it looks like: A payment redirected to the wrong account, mail rules quietly forwarding to an external address, sign ins from places nobody travels to, or a vendor saying they have been emailing someone who isn't you.
What we do: Preserve mailbox and tenant audit evidence, trace the compromised identity and any OAuth grants issued along the way, map what the attacker read and sent, and close the access paths before the next wire goes out.
Data Breach & Exfiltration
What it looks like: Large outbound transfers nobody scheduled, data appearing somewhere it shouldn't, or a third party telling you your records are circulating.
What we do: Determine what was accessed, what actually left the environment, and which notification obligations that triggers, with the documentation counsel and carriers need to make decisions on a clock.
Insider Threat & Data Theft
What it looks like: Bulk downloads before a resignation, personal cloud storage or USB use out of pattern, or access to systems outside someone's role.
What we do: Establish what was taken, when, and by which account, using a documented chain of custody. We hand findings to your counsel and HR. We investigate the incident, we don't litigate it.
Cloud & SaaS Compromise
What it looks like: Unexplained admin changes in M365 or Google Workspace, new IAM roles or access keys in AWS or Azure, resources spun up in regions you don't use, or MFA prompts users didn't trigger.
What we do: Reconstruct attacker activity from cloud side audit logs, identify what was reached across tenants and subscriptions, and remove the persistence that survives a password reset: tokens, app grants, keys, and federated trust.
Third Party & Supply Chain Compromise
What it looks like: An incident that starts at a vendor, an MSP, or a software update. The first warning often arrives from someone else's breach notification.
What we do: Establish what the third party's access reached inside your environment, separate their incident from yours, and give you a defensible account of your own exposure rather than an inherited one.
Advanced Persistent Threats & Long Dwell Intrusion
What it looks like: Often nothing. Intrusions discovered months in, through an external tip, an odd authentication pattern, or a finding during unrelated work.
What we do: Hunt for persistence and lateral movement below alerting thresholds, reconstruct a timeline from the evidence that survives long dwell, and establish the full scope before eradication, because a partial eviction against a patient adversary is worse than none.
Identity & Credential Compromise
What it looks like: Credential stuffing against your external footprint, MFA fatigue prompts, impossible travel sign ins, or privileged accounts doing things their owners didn't do.
What we do: Establish which credentials and sessions were taken, then reset and revoke together, because resets without session and token revocation leave the attacker logged in. We rebuild trust in the identity environment, including Active Directory, before anything is restored onto it.
What a DFIR Engagement Covers
Rapid Threat Containment
Immediate triage and containment. Our responders deploy remotely using our in house IR platform, coordinating every containment action from a single command surface.

- Hardened clean image rebuilds
- Active Directory reconstruction and identity environment cleanup
- Backup integrity verification and recovery sequencing
- Initial access vector closure and post incident hardening
The DFIR Engagement Lifecycle
Average 30 minutes to containment. Complex environments and on site requirements extend that. The ranges below reflect real engagement variance, not a service level ceiling.
Engage
0 to 30 minInitial call, threat assessment, scoping. We determine severity, engagement structure, and whether to operate under counsel privilege.
Contain
30 min to 2 hrRemote agent deployment, endpoint isolation, network containment. Identity and backup infrastructure are isolated first. We stop the bleeding before we start the investigation.
Investigate
2 to 48 hrAI accelerated forensic analysis, root cause identification, attack timeline reconstruction. Evidence collected and preserved under documented chain of custody.
Eradicate
24 to 72 hrComplete removal of attacker presence, backdoor elimination, persistence neutralization, verified against evidence, then rebuild.
Recover
1 to 5 daysSystem restoration, data restoration, business resumption. Backup integrity verification, clean rebuilds, phased reconnection to production.
Harden
OngoingPost incident improvements, monitoring deployment, lessons learned documentation, transition to continuous coverage.
DFIR Case Studies
Every case below is drawn from a real engagement.
How We Investigate Faster
Speed in DFIR is not about rushing the investigation. It is about removing the delays that don't produce evidence, and keeping a senior analyst on every conclusion that does.
AI accelerated triage
Our forensic analysis pipeline uses proprietary models trained on real world incident data, running entirely on Proven Data infrastructure. Automated IOC extraction, log correlation, and malware family identification compress the initial artifact analysis that would otherwise consume the first days of an investigation, so analysts spend their time on the questions that actually require judgment: scope, root cause, and whether eradication can be proven.
Human in the loop validation
AI accelerates classification and correlation. It does not draw conclusions. Every finding is reviewed and validated by a senior DFIR analyst before it appears in a report, and every report goes through multi layer peer review before delivery.
Forensic data privacy and isolation
Client artifacts never route through third party AI services, cloud LLMs, or external processing pipelines. Per case sandboxing, encrypted processing, and automatic artifact purging keep evidence from one engagement isolated from every other.
Built on Lynx
Lynx is our proprietary incident response and case management platform. Every engagement runs through it: endpoint isolation, artifact collection, stakeholder communication, and case documentation on one command surface, with a timestamped record of every action taken.
Learn more about LynxRansomware specialization
Proven Data was built on ransomware response, and we maintain active intelligence profiles on every major ransomware group. When a variant hits your environment we usually know the TTP pattern, the likely dwell behavior, and whether a decryption path exists before we start looking. Payment is always the last resort. We exhaust backup restoration, decryptor availability, partial file recovery, and shadow copy analysis first.
DFIR Retainers, MSP Partnership, and Panel Readiness
Most of our engagements start with a call from someone who has never spoken to us before. A retainer doesn't change whether we will take the case. It changes how fast the first hour goes.
DFIR retainer
A retainer puts contracting, scoping, and environment familiarity behind you before an incident, so engagement starts at containment instead of paperwork.
- No retainer minimums. Pricing reflects organization size, not an enterprise floor.
- Prepaid hours apply to proactive work. Readiness assessments, tabletop exercises, and playbook development draw from the same balance.
- No loss at end of term. Unused hours roll into renewal rather than expiring.
- No tool lock in. You are not required to run our platform or endpoint agents to hold a retainer.
- Defined response SLA, with escalation paths agreed in advance.
- Pre scoped environment. We document your architecture, identity model, and backup topology before an incident, not during one.
For SMB IT teams
- No retainer minimums. Engage when you need us, at pricing that reflects your organization size
- Plain language reporting your board, insurer, and legal team can actually use
- A dedicated case manager from first call to full recovery, with no hand offs between departments
- Post incident transition to continuous monitoring so you are not left unprotected
- Compliance documentation covering HIPAA, PCI, state breach notification, and cyber insurance requirements
For MSPs and MSSPs
- White label DFIR capability. Extend your service catalog without building an in house team
- Multi tenant console for managing response across your entire client base
- Partner SLAs with defined response times and escalation procedures
- Co branded reporting that keeps your MSP as the client's primary security partner
- Volume pricing and retainer structures built for managed service delivery
For breach counsel and cyber carriers

DFIR and Incident Response FAQs
Reviewed by Proven Data's DFIR team.
What is digital forensics and incident response (DFIR)?
DFIR combines two disciplines that work on the same incident from different ends. Incident response stops an active attack: isolating affected systems, evicting the attacker, and restoring operations. Digital forensics establishes what actually happened: how the attacker got in, what they reached, what they took, and whether they are really gone. Run separately, they undercut each other, because containment destroys evidence and investigation stalls while the attacker stays live. Run together, containment and evidence preservation happen in parallel.
What's the difference between digital forensics and incident response?
Incident response is about the present: stop it, contain it, get back online. Digital forensics is about the past: reconstruct what happened, with evidence that holds up. The practical difference shows in sequencing. Reimage a machine immediately and you have recovered fast but destroyed the telemetry that proves eradication, and without proof of eradication every restore is a gamble. A DFIR engagement sequences both so neither compromises the other.
What are the five steps of incident response?
The NIST framework defines preparation, detection and analysis, containment, eradication and recovery, and post incident activity. In practice we run six phases: Engage, Contain, Investigate, Eradicate, Recover, Harden. The split matters because eradication and recovery are separate decisions. You can only recover onto infrastructure you have proven is clean, and organizations that collapse those two steps usually end up doing the whole job twice.
What does an incident response team do?
In the first hour: isolate affected systems at the network layer, protect identity and backup infrastructure, and establish out of band communications on the assumption that email and chat are compromised. Over the following days: reconstruct how the attacker got in and what they reached, determine whether data left the environment, remove persistence, and verify eradication before restoration begins. Throughout: document everything to a standard breach counsel, carriers, and regulators can rely on.
When should you engage a DFIR firm?
As soon as you suspect an intrusion you can't fully scope internally. The most expensive mistakes happen in the first hour, before anyone external is involved, and both of the common ones are self inflicted. Under isolation: triaging host by host while the attacker is still live, so re encryption hits systems you have already restored. Over destruction: reimaging immediately and in arbitrary order, destroying the evidence needed to prove eradication. Calling early costs a scoping conversation. Calling late costs weeks.
How quickly can you respond to an incident?
Our triage team is available 24/7/365. For active incidents we begin remote containment within 30 minutes of engagement on average. Complex environments and on site requirements extend that, and we coordinate next business day deployment where physical access is required.
What does Proven Data's DFIR service not cover?
We perform incident driven digital forensics: investigating, containing, and recovering from active and recent security incidents. We do not provide litigation support, expert witness testimony, eDiscovery, consumer or personal device examinations, or traditional data recovery for failed or physically damaged hardware. Where an incident later becomes a legal matter, we hand our findings and documentation to your counsel.
What's the first thing to do when ransomware hits?
Enforce isolation aggressively but deliberately. Sever network connectivity at switch ports, VLANs, and the VPN concentrator rather than powering systems off. Pull network cables, not power cords. Machines mid encryption are an exception, but a powered off machine loses memory evidence you will need. Isolate domain controllers and backup repositories first, and verify your crown jewels are out of reach. Then contact IR counsel and a response firm on an out of band channel, assuming email and Teams are compromised.
Should we pay the ransom?
It depends on whether you have a verified, clean, restorable recovery path, and that is a question evidence answers, not instinct. Two things are worth knowing before deciding. Payment for deletion is unverifiable by construction: when law enforcement dismantled LockBit's infrastructure in February 2024, they found data belonging to victims who had paid specifically for its deletion. And where a decryptor is delivered, it only addresses encryption. It does nothing about data already taken. We exhaust recovery options first and bring in negotiation only when it is the remaining path.
Our data is on a leak site. What now?
The nature of the incident changes. Exfiltration is no longer suspected, it is confirmed, and the leverage event has already happened. It stops being a containment problem and becomes a notification and harm reduction one. Preserve evidence first: capture the listing, timestamps, and samples of the published data for counsel. Then analyze which notification clocks are already running, since GDPR's 72 hours, state breach laws, HIPAA, GLBA, and the SEC's four business day rule all trigger differently. Assume the data is permanently public and plan from there.
Why does recovery take weeks instead of days?
The bottleneck is almost never data restoration. It is trust. Four things drive the long cases: unproven eradication, where scope and root cause aren't confirmed, so nothing can be safely restored; backup reality, meaning untested backups, encrypted backups, or restore throughput nobody ever measured; application interdependency, where getting a server back is fast but getting a business owner to certify that the ERP and its data are correct is not; and decision latency, where insurance approval, counsel review, and executive indecision routinely consume more wall clock time than any technical task.
Do we need a retainer to engage your DFIR services?
No. We take emergency engagements with no prior relationship and no retainer minimum. A retainer changes the starting position rather than the availability: pre agreed terms, pre scoped environment knowledge, and a faster start because contracting is already done. For MSPs and organizations with carrier requirements, that is usually worth the difference.
Can you work under attorney client privilege?
Yes, routinely, at the direction of breach counsel. Our engagement structure, documentation standards, and communication protocols are built for privileged work, and we establish the privilege posture during the Engage phase rather than retrofitting it later.
What compliance frameworks do you follow?
Engagements follow the NIST CSF lifecycle with playbooks mapped to NIST SP 800-61. Our incident management procedures align with ISO 27035, and our internal ISMS follows ISO 27001 controls. Healthcare engagements incorporate HIPAA breach notification requirements, PHI exposure assessment, and HHS reporting timelines from day one. Payment card investigations follow PCI DSS Requirement 12.10.
Do you support MSPs managing multiple client incidents?
Yes. MSPs and MSSPs engage us as white label DFIR capability, with a multi tenant console for managing response across a client base, partner SLAs with defined response and escalation, co branded reporting, and volume pricing built for managed delivery.
What makes this different from hiring separate IR and forensics firms?
Sequencing and accountability. With separate vendors, containment and evidence preservation compete. The IR firm wants the attacker out now, the forensics firm wants the evidence intact, and the client arbitrates during the worst week of their year. One engagement, one team, one platform covers containment through recovery, with a single case owner and no gaps between the containment record and the forensic record.
